Quitter

For the past few weeks I have been trying to save money on groceries. As of today I officially quit. Here's why.

Harris Teeter is currently running a "super double" coupon promotion. For those of you out of the loop, this means that they will double any coupon up to $1.98 face value. HT is not my usual grocery store. (That would be Wegmans, which I love.) I figured that this was a good enough deal to drive a few miles out of my way for. So I loaded the two little ones into Lucille and drove about 10 miles to the nearest HT.

I got my little envelope of coupons together and hustled everyone into the store. It was almost immedietly apparent that this had been a wasted trip. The prices were all higher than at my beloved Wegmans. In fact, most of the prices were so high that the doubling of my coupons would only result on the shelf price at Wegmans. The few products that would have been a good deal were all completely sold out.

As I was driving home, frustrated and hungry, I thought about the whole process. I had spent over an hour driving around, wandering through the store and waiting on line to save something like $8. This was time I could have spent playing with my kids, cuddling with my baby or heck, even cleaning my house.

So I'm giving up the pursuit of savings ... Or at least the pursuit of extreme savings. I'll probably still clip coupons and I'll still scope out Target a week after the major holidays. Fact is, I'm never going to feed my family on $10 a week, so I'm done running all over Virginia trying to.

This will give me more time to clean the house....or not.

Hey-don't forget to leave your comment to win free cereal coupons.

  1. Don't give up! I would just look for manufacturers coupons for the things you buy at your regular store, doubled or not. It sounds like that would work out to be a better deal anyway. I clipped coupons big time today for groceries and managed to save $47. Don't give up! :)

  2. I admire people who can feed their family for $10 a week, but I've never been able to do it. I tried a number of systems and coupons just don't cut it for me. I cut them out but rarely remember to use them. Years ago I switched to a system of planning a weekly menu - based around the sales at my fav grocery store and shopping once a week. I think I spend less in the long run, it's easier to track the budget and it saves me tons of time!

  3. Ugh... That sucks! Ya know, it's just so damned had to get ahead- or stay afloat even! It's just so frustrating! This could snowball into a big, nasty rant, so I'll stop. Take care, and I think it's a good idea to focus on the time with family!
